5.3 isn't compatible with 10.11.
I wouldn't even both trying to run an older version of it on an older OS depending on what you want to do. As Apple moves forward with updates to their devices, some features of an older Server version no longer work as well or at all.
For example, all the additional items in the new iOS that can be managed with Profile Manager simply are not available in the old server. If you wanted to make use of the Caching Server for updates to your devices, 5.2 no longer works AT ALL and refuses to connect to Apple since they updated to 5.3 (discovered that little gem myself in our Enterprise environment which forced us to update.)
